Invasive Species Pulling Volunteer Event at Target Rock

Volunteer to remove invasive species like purple foxglove along the trails at Target Rock NWR. Meet at the Rocky Beach and Gardener’s Path trailheads.

Provided: Snacks, water refills, work gloves, insect repellent, and work gear will be provided.

Bring: refillable water bottle, sturdy close-toed shoes, light colored clothing, long pants, long socks, long sleeves, hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

Please be aware that ticks are prevalent.

Volunteers must complete a volunteer services agreement; volunteers under age 18 must have parental permission to participate.

Water Chestnut Pull: Massapequa Preserve

We will be pulling a population of invasive European water chestnut from the Massapequa preserve in the pond north of Clark blvd. Non-motorized boats are encouraged but work can be done in waders or boots as well. Please contact Heidi.ORiordan@dec.ny.gov to sign up.

Aquatic Invasive Plant Management at Wampus Pond

No experience is necessary! All tools & work gloves will be provided but please bring your own water. Volunteers should wear clothes that can get dirty and closed toe shoes.

Terrestrial Invasive Species Hand-Pull

Join SLELO PRISM on June 8th from 10 am – 12 pm at South Colwell Pond at the Montario Point Boat Launch located on Montario Point Road, Henderson, NY, to help remove an invasive species called yellow flag iris. No experience is needed and tools will be provided. Bring your own gloves and dress for the weather as this is an outdoor event.

Commonly grown and transplanted for its showy yellow flowers, the yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) has invaded wetlands and other aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats and can be found at the edges of streams and ponds, in open and forested flood plains, along shorelines, and in freshwater and brackish marshes.

Chop + Cheese

It’s back! Japanese knotweed, that is, and that means Chop & Cheese is back, too. Join us as we continue our efforts at eliminating a patch of the highly invasive plant, Japanese knotweed at Mohican Farm in Springfield. We’ll cut back the plants and dig up the roots, and then we’ll enjoy light refreshments overlooking Otsego Lake in Mohican Farm’s beautiful garden. Get a Hand on Invasive Species

Join us at the Indian Fort Nature Preserve to learn how to identify and remove a variety of invasive species such as multiflora rose, honeysuckle, and slender false brome using hand tools.X

Mile-a-Minute Removal

On Wed 6/7 from 4-6 pm, join North Shore Land Alliance in a Mile-a-Minute pull in the upper meadow at the Red Cote Preserve in Oyster Bay Cove. We will also tour the preserve and learn about the interactions between native and invasive species.

Invasive plant removal at High Acres Nature Area

Removal of Callery Pear and Autumn Olive and potentially water lilies in the main pond along the trails at High Acres Nature Area. Volunteers are needed to cut and saw down these invasive bushes. Clippers, Saws, gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own tools such as clippers, saws, and your own gloves. If you would like to remove water lilies it is recommended to bring your own hip or chest waders.
