Join the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) to learn about ways invasive species can impact the quality of your favorite lake. Invasive species can have negative effects on the environment, the ecology and the economy of NY. We will discuss ways large and small, obvious and obscure that invasive plants and animals impact our lakes. More importantly, we will review simple steps everyone can take to prevent the spread of invasive species and to help scientists collect data. Brian Greene, APIPP’s aquatic invasive species coordinator, will present this virtual talk for all lake lovers in NY and beyond as part of NY’s Invasive Species Awareness Week. The workshop will be followed by an in-person, family-friendly, interactive afternoon at the Lake Flower boat launch in Saranac Lake, NY.

Many invasive plants were once considered desirable ornamentals that were intentionally introduced to gardens and landscapes only to escape into our natural environments. You can play a vital role in the introduction and the prevention of invasive plants by choosing to grow native species and taking action to control invasives you may find on your property. This presentation will provide an overview of native alternatives to common invasive garden plants, the benefits of native plants, and ways to get involved.
