Join us at Spiral House Park for a hands-on volunteer day in recognition of New York Invasive Species Awareness Week. Together, we’ll care for the park’s landscape by learning to identify and remove invasive plant species along the Welcome Trail.
Invasive species are one of the greatest ecological challenges facing the Catskills region, often outcompeting native plants, reducing biodiversity, and impacting the health of local forests and habitats. This volunteer day offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the land while directly supporting the long-term ecological health of the park.
The day will begin with a group training session covering invasive plant identification and effective removal methods, including live demonstrations. We will work together in one focused area of the park and provide tools for participants, though volunteers are welcome to bring their own gloves and gardening tools. Those with more experience are encouraged to assist with the removal of larger invasive species such as barberry and multiflora rose.
Please come prepared for active outdoor work. Expect gardening-style conditions including kneeling, digging, and potentially warm weather. We recommend bringing water, bug spray, sturdy footwear, gloves, and clothing appropriate for working in the woods.
Participants do not need to stay for the full session, though attendance at the opening training is strongly encouraged.
