Job Description

BACKGROUND

The Long Island Native Plant Initiative Inc. (LINPI) is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to conserve the genetic diversity of Long Island’s native plants with a particular emphasis on the production and use of ecotypes.  The organization’s activities include seed collection, propagation, and sale of native plant materials as well as the education of horticulture professionals and the general public on the importance of conserving the genetics of native plant species.  The Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA), the local Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) is coordinated by LINPI in an effort to further protect the region’s native plant populations through the prevention and management of invasive species. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The LIISMA Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for implementing invasive species education outreach and removal activities.  The candidate will provide leadership and technical support in the development, management, and advancement of invasive species programming for the Long Island region including Staten Island.  The LIISMA Outreach Coordinator will develop and support volunteer, internship, and fellowship programs.  Activities may include, but are not limited to: developing and disseminating educational materials related to invasive species; organizing and assisting with volunteer field efforts; developing and implementing citizen science activities; developing and implementing community training workshops, outreach events and activities; conducting grant writing; and utilizing social media.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Outreach Coordinator will assist to the LIISMA Coordinator with various activities related to the LIISMA PRISM. The candidate will implement outreach events, projects, and activities with the goal of increasing the effectiveness of invasive species prevention, management, and eradication. This position requires sufficient invasive species, conservation, and natural resource management work experience in order to perform the following functions:

 

Outreach Coordination

  • Foster cross-site learning among diverse groups including landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for LIISMA/ LINPI.
  • Coordinate the planning and direction of a comprehensive and integrated invasive species education and outreach program.
  • Coordinate and present programming on best management practices for invasive species identification, prevention, control, and site restoration.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of conferences, citizen science training, and invasive species education workshops.
  • Coordinate volunteer activities and assist local partner groups with invasive species projects.
  • Contribute updates and content for websites and social media accounts.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of grants to further programming.

 

Field Activities

  • Lead and assist volunteer teams in the identification and removal of terrestrial and aquatic invasive species.
  • Address critical invasive species threats by conducting or coordinating research, planning, surveying, mapping, as well as prioritizing management, restoration, and monitoring of invasive species infestations.
  • Analyze species distribution trends and management efficiency through data collection programs including geographic information systems and databases in order to set priorities for prevention and management.
  • Assist with invasive species surveys and mapping using iMap Invasives.
  • Aid in the development and use of ecologically appropriate plant materials for restoration.      
  • Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

 

 MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS in Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science/Studies, Biology, Education, or related field and 2 years of experience.
  • Practical experience in invasive species ecology and management.
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means.
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media, both in writing and verbally, and comfortable speaking in front of a wide variety of audiences.
  • Leadership experience in managing staff, students, or volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Websites), Google Applications, and Constant Contact.
  • Skilled in data collection and processing of geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS).
  • Experience in invasive and native species identification and management including the ability to use dichotomous keys.
  • Experience with SEQRA, Threatened and Endangered Species, Wetland, and Cultural Resource regulations.Must have a valid driver's license. Certification as a NYS Pesticide Commercial Applicator/Technician, or the ability to acquire one within 90 days of hire.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum qualifications outlined above plus:
  • Knowledge of aquatic (freshwater and marine) and terrestrial habitats.
  • Ability to convey best management practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices related to conservation, invasive species, urbanization, restoration and natural resource management.
  • Experience in training and curriculum design.
  • Experience writing or assisting in the creation of factsheets, lesson plans, or group activities.
  • Experience in event planning.
  • Demonstrated success in grant and contract writing and implementation.
  • Experience in horticulture and nursery production.
  • Knowledge of environmental affairs policy.

 

WORK SCHEDULE CONDITIONS

Schedule: The position is a full time salaried position.  Most work will occur during regular business hours (Monday through Friday), with occasional duties and activities occurring on weekends and early evenings.  Overnight travel for meetings and trainings will occasionally be required.

Conditions: The LIISMA coverage area extends from Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties, requiring travel within the NYC Metro region across Long Island to Fishers Island and occasionally throughout New York State.  By its nature, the position entails work in both inside and outside locations where temperatures, weather, insects, and other climatic conditions will vary significantly.  As such, the individual must be suited to working in such conditions without undue burden.  At times, this position can require kneeling, stooping, extensive walking and hiking, lifting heavy objects up to 50 lbs., and occasional handling of pesticides or other chemical products.  May require long hours in isolated settings, challenging field conditions, or public spaces.

Compensation: This is a salaried position of $45,000 per year plus generous benefits package.
