Pennsylvania’s Field Guide to Aquatic Invasive Species now available

The long awaited Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Field Guide for Pennsylvania is now available on the new PA Sea Grant website.

The field guide, created by PA Sea Grant Coastal Outreach Specialist, Sara Grise, was designed to help identify new AIS infestations, and to help slow or stop their spread in Pennsylvania. It includes the following sections: tips on how to use the guide, how to prevent the spread of AIS, and how to properly collect and report specimens.

The more than 50 “species profiles” highlight important characteristics to distinguish AIS from other species. Profiles are separated by taxa and include: aquatic and facultative plants, invertebrates, fish, pathogens, algae, and reptiles/amphibians.

The field guide is available on the PA Sea Grant website where it can be downloaded for free. Due to the large file size, the field guide is available to download in nine sections.

Limited hard copies will soon be available for purchase or you can request a free high resolution printable PDF. Contact invasivespecies@psu.edu or call Sara Grise at 814-217-9020.
